Three years ago, we went on our first summer family trip to Sault St Marie, where we discovered “we needed more time” to disconnect and reconnect with ourselves and our children’s unique personalities. To have more time to be together as a family uninterrupted, enjoying each other and adventure. We needed that three years ago, to leave it all behind for a while after our son Jude died, just the four of us with the magic of him playing out around us.

It’s been a long time since our “last family trip,” since the geneticist called right after, and we were reminded again of our big fat bruise. I can’t believe it! We’ve had many family moments since, but time is fast and slow and all the same at once.

Three years later, we returned for a quick three-day trip.

Ayda is spicy! She even fell in the water. Not all moments were “peachy,” though I relished in her and her being here to be all those things! Where we’ve come since then and how we were catapulted back into that good and bad time.

There are bad days, there are good ones, along with neither bad nor good ones. Our first day was too soggy, our next day was really good, and our third was just right.

I’ve been doing pretty well, but the bad days do come, and so do the great ones like this time away.

These short three days were long in everything we wanted. We screamed, we fell, we danced, we cried, we resorted to our devices during mediocre moments, we hugged, we played, and we felt without worry! I take in how we got here and get to be, how all my worries are valid but are allowed to disappear for a while.

Like peaches, there are the juicy ones and the bruised ones.

Here we are as both, the family we are. We needed this to forget the yucky mushy bits to, sprinkle some sugar on it, and take in the glee we get from the juice that squirts when you get that perfect bite! It can be absolutely not as we expected it would be, but still filled with YUM.

Today, I savour the good parts…the juiciest ones with my peachy ones! 🍑
